How Will Retail Open Up?

Creative Channel Research: one in a series

Listening to local and national health authorities, watching how retailers and non-essential retail is opening up in other markets like Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany as well and direction and guidance coming from political leaders, we are assembling a view of how we expect retail to open up and what changes you can expect with those openings. We are confident in our view that all implementation for opening will be on a state/region by region basis with variations by markets, cities and towns.

We expect that with this variation these are some of our emerging expectations as to what you are likely to see at most retail as the openings begin:


  • Exclusive shopping hours for vulnerable populations

  • Temperature checks for employees and service providers entering stores

  • Limits on occupancy with queuing outside the stores

  • Re-Opening sales and other traffic drivers to bring a hesitant population back into stores

  • Online Purchase Store Pickup (BOPIS) locations moved outside the store or to another area (to create more physical separation)

  • The removal of cash-register and cash-register lanes with transactions taking place in-aisle and a greater move to cashless payments

  • People are starting to value shipping more and we are likely to see a growth in payment for shipping along with a more premium delivery options (i.e. scheduled delivery times, white-glove installation – with mask and gloves, etc.)

  • Establishing appointment services in stores to minimize the need to queue outside a store if you have an established appointment

  • Premium entry lines for the best customers

  • Rethinking the use of outdoor space – in the parking lot – as well as outside customer queues
