The Switch to Digital: What to Expect

The switch to all-digital broadcasting will be complete by February 17, 2009. Here's what you can expect over the next several months:

  • Analog broadcasts - traditional TV systems using radio frequency waves to transmit and display pictures and sound - will phase out by 2009.
  • All new TVs can receive and/or display Digital TV (DTV) signals.
  • All TV stations nationwide are broadcasting digitally.
  • All new analog sets will be clearly labeled as having only an analog tuner.

As stations cease analog broadcasts, new consumer and public technologies can begin to utilize this valuable spectrum for Emergency Communications Networks and wireless Internet.
